Gomeldon Primary School Curriculum Statement

Gomeldon Primary School is an inspirational learning community in which everyone is valued supported and equipped to love learning in an inclusive, welcoming and safe environment.

Intent:

Our curriculum is rooted in high-expectations and ambition for all our pupils, particularly our most disadvantaged learners. Our aim is to deliver richly connected knowledge and skills which are revisited and built upon, wo that our pupils know more and remember more. Through our ‘R’ Values, Relationships, Resilience, Resourcefulness and Reflection and golden threads of ‘Belonging, Curiosity and Apprenticeship’, all our pupils will leave Gomeldon with the skills to be successful in the world they will inherit.

We recognise that children cannot aspire to things they have never encountered. We will work to broaden our children’s horizons, expanding their knowledge of the world of work by nurturing their interests as well as fostering curiosity and encouraging fearlessness of what is new or unknown. This is achieved through first-hand, enriching experiences outside the classroom and planning for visitors and experts to bring a breadth and depth to children’s experiences. For all children this is important, but for our pupils the curriculum supports their ability to become a successful citizen of the world, as well as develop the strong personal skills they need to succeed.

Implementation

Our curriculum is bespoke to Gomeldon Primary School and our pupils are inspired by the people, places and stories of our unique setting. It enhances the National Curriculum through an enquiry-led pedagogy, underpinned by Curious City.  Enquiry-led learning provokes learners with key questions too big to answer in one go, but not so conceptually large that they cannot understand.  The purpose is to guide learners through a scaffolded process, answering the big question with a piece of writing for example, performance or animation.  As cognitive development, emotional literacy and language immersion underpin the Curious-city approach, as well as purposeful links to mastery-led learning principles, we recognise children's awareness of the world develops as they mature and that this has a significant impact on their ability to learn.  Our job is to help learners make sense of the world, not just expose them to it. As part of this development we have introduced ‘States of Being’ to empower learners. Each subject has a Champion which is sometimes referred to as the Subject Leader

Subjects are taught through the following ‘States of Being’:

Some areas of the curriculum, including Phonics, English and Maths are taught discretely and we use a number of proven, evidence-based schemes of learning to provide high-quality experiences for all of our pupils.

Impact

Children at Gomeldon Primary School will demonstrate the following because of their learning journey with us.

  • Belong: Our pupils will know that they are an important member of our school community and will work collaboratively with others to achieve success. They will have a sense of responsibility for their local and wider community, developing their sense of being a successful global citizen.

  • Curiosity: Pupils at Gomeldon are fearlessness of what is new or unknown and have the confidence to expand their knowledge of the world by being curious and asking questions. They have the self-belief to follow their own interests and take risks with their learning.

  • Apprenticeship: Pupils leave Gomeldon Primary School with a rich, age-appropriate understanding of the world around them, ready for the next stage of their journey towards being life-long learners.
